At The Gates is one of the bands from Gothenburg that started the whole melodic death metal scene. However, they started of their career with the fantastic death metal album The Red in the Sky is Ours before progressing to the more melodic style of bands like Dark Tranquility and In Flames.

Personally, I'm not a huge fan of their melodeath stuff, but TRITSIO is easily one of my favorite death metal albums.
Personally, I'll always prefer In Flames out of all the similar Gothenburg bands. I know how poppy and how much of a turn the album was, but "Reroute to Remain" is so fucking awesome.

Can't say At The Gates ever did much for me. Not much at all.
Man... there will never be a band quite like them again. The early stuff is epic. And I think they are possibly the only of the Gothenberg bands that balanced Death Metal riffs with that melodic side perfectly. All the other bands after them make being melodic a gimmick. And honestly I can't listen to 90% of these bands cause of it. It just sounds forced to me. At the Gates never abused or overused their melodicism. Combine that great style with punishing musicianship, just a lethal combination.

There are several better melodeath bands that are better than At The Gates; I can agree with that. However, TRITSIO is better than anything that In Flames has ever released, IMO.
Better than Whoracle and Clayman? I will have to check this out then.

I would say so, yes. Keep in mind that its much more death metal than melodeath, though.
I heard some songs off TRITSIO on a streaming radio show and was very pleased. It was good stuff.
I am listening to it right now and am quite pleased. Better than Whoracle, Clayman and stuff of that nature? Well I really am a sucker for melodies so I am going to have to disagree.
I'm melodic dm's public enemy #1, Razz Lol , and no, I just cannot bring myself to like bands like At The Gates, In Flames, Cradle of Filth and loads more of their related sorts. Though, ATG is somehow somewhat definitely better than plenty more of its peers in the realms of melodeath. I, predictably enough, only really dig the moments when ATG choose to slay with some savage death metal phases in many of their songs. Warlock was spot-on about how too many melo-dm acts seemingly make a dumb gimmick out of melodicism. While some gimmicks, in metal, work some of the time--trendy, tawdry melodicism in death metal, just never does, for me.

The last time I actually listened to and enjoyed what can be called melodic dm is something like the extremely good Monstrosity, or at least their rather melodic albums such as In Dark Purity or their excellent last one of '07, Spiritual Apocalypse. Some of you might wanna check those albums out. Also, isn't an act like Arsis also sort of tech-melodic dm? I remember Butt being a fan of theirs. Smile
You actually hit the nail on the head when it comes to Arsis, genre-wise. Yeah, I'm a pretty big fan of them (not so much the later work, never really grabbed me, but the debut and the EP are some sick shit).
Bump.

Have you heard any of At the Gates' early material? They started out as technical death metal but then switched to melodeath. I think you might like The Red in the Sky is Ours. Give that one a listen. It sounds absolutely nothing like Slaughter of the Soul.
