Best metal album I've heard in the past two years.
I've heard a lot of things about Gojira, both good and bad. I'll have to check them out sometime. The Metal Archives say they're Death/Thrash/Groove Metal, so they should be interesting, if nothing else.
They strike me as a combination of Meshuggah, Sepultura, Metallica, and Tool. I think the key elements are progressive creativity and ingenious songwriting. I've seriously never heard anything quite like them, and I have to include them amongst my 20 favorite bands after having heard their 4 albums once each. "The Way Of All Flesh" is definitely my favorite but you may end up enjoying "From Mars To Sirius" more, a lot of people do.
This band is absolutely incredible. I saw them live back in December of last year when they headlined along with In Flames.
I knew a few songs before I saw them, but after the concert I was hooked.

I recommend Flying Whales, Heaviest Matter Of The Universe, Oroborus, and The Art Of Dying.
I think the bands debut album must be listened before getting into the later stuff. I mean "Terra Incognita" is one of the best debut albums I've heard. They've been critisized alright, but which band hasn't?Smile
To my shame (as I consider myself a pretty big fan, I saw them each times they went to Canada since their show with In Flames, my first show), I never heard their first two albums, though I know the classics (Love, Remembrance and Clone).

From Mars is a great album, though it contains some weird songs (which makes it less mainstream, but I don't really care about that bullshit). TWOAF (beside being a cool acronym) is more coherent and more solid.

It remains a grandiose act live, they create a unbelievable "spatial" atmosphere and they bassist is a damn live machine.

Their drummer is awesome too, definitely in my top 5 metal drummers.
Finally started listening to them. Still listening through their albums, but damn they've made a fan out of me so quickly.

I love everything I've heard so far; their innovative/fresh use of melodies (some unusual at that), the gripping shifts in timing, various atmospheres and vocal styles throughout each song...it's like everything I love all in one. I am really impressed and it has been a while since I have been so eager to listen to a band's discography.
They're one of the three death metal bands I actually enjoy listening to, so that's got to say something about their quality. I even nominated From Mars to Sirius for the MnS Top 50.

Jan, review a Gojira album for your first DM album review. Cool

Also, I'm shocked/saddened there's not much discussion on them. Sad RJ go listen to them.
There is no discussion because no faggots would dare to say they're bad, and all their albums are awesome.
Well lack of argument doesn't necessarily mean lack of discussion. Razz

There's plenty to talk about answering questions like how did you come across them in the first place, what stood out/why you like them, what bands remind you of them, what bands would you recommend that's similar to them, side projects, tunings/gear, albums: pros, cons, rank, which songs are the best, background history, and so on. Granted those can be one post comments, but it's a start for comparison.

Anywho I guess I'll go through what makes them stand out to me:
  • Numerous melody and groove shifts in every song, ie. it's never boring and every song stands out. I just find melody to be harder to compose. Period. At the same time they can be technical, fresh and mesh other melodies together. That is a huge feat imo that they were able to tackle it in an interesting way, hence why they feel so unique.
  • Vocal styles are varied; different guttural levels, rasp cleans are flexible; harsh vox is used with a lot of melody super well which is sweet as hell since that's not very common and hard to execute.
  • Various musical styles are used and melded together very well; especially their use of I guess acoustic drumming and such to make some songs seem more nature-y/earthly.
  • Lyrics are actually worth following along. This is a big one for me. A lot of metal lyrics I completely disregard. A lot of them are just cheesy and/or generic as hell so they feel redundant. I like their subject matter of life, death, being human, spirituality, what it means to live, environment, nature, etc. They're more tangible and interesting. They're generally more thought provoking, you know? Granted being French there's some grammar mistakes here and there but who cares.
  • Related to lyrics: I love following along 'cause I enjoy their vocal phrasing or rather Joe Duplantier's specifically. It's fun and interesting how he breaks down the lyrics with the tempo and phrasing of the rest of the instruments.
  • They're fucking nice and genuine guys, man. From the interviews and vids I watched so far you can see that they are just sincere folks who write what comes from their hearts and mind, not to follow a scene or lifestyle. Like with their Sea Shepherd interest (though I've still to look into that so I'm critical of it). Basically it feels like they are really their own persons not trying to fit in anywhere.
  • Hell yeah Joe uses a Telecaster. Cool
  • I like saying Duplantier and other French words. Pacman

I probably have more to add, but good enough. Least to say I really dig this band. I'd like to watch them play as my first metal concert. That'd be rad. Grin
Oh and:

Quote:Karma: If not music, then what?

Joe: Baseball!

Karma: [Shocked] Really?

Joe: Yeah! I love baseball; I’m a pitcher. In France we don’t have so many teams, you know. When I was 15-years old I wanted to be professional, you know. It was impossible so I formed a band.

CoolCoolCool
From mars to sirus is one of my favourite albums.
