Angelcorpse, from Kansas City, Missouri, is one of those select numbers of niche bands christened by fans and critics/reviewers to be 'blackened death'. They relocated to Tampa, Florida, the legendary hotbed of American Death Metal, and debuted with the classic Hammer of Gods album, in '96. They actually topped that with the superb follow-up, Exterminate in '98, and then the third straight disc, The Inexorable, in '99, before band turmoil and other issues made them disband soon thereafter.

They reunited in 2006 and released a comeback record, Of Lucifer and Lightning that got pretty mixed fan reactions. I reckon I mostly like it, all round.

I always found Angelcorpse an extremely gifted, honest, and impressive bunch of musicians that played with a lot of passion and purity--in their approach and execution. I'd add that I, for one, always found their sound to be slightly more bm-oriented, most of the time. I haven't yet seen their much-praised live album, Death Dragons of the Apocalypse.

Great band. Hammer of Gods is really cool. But Exterminate & The Inexorable are both quite incredible albums, and I would say essentials for all black & death metal fans. Death Dragons is indeed as well. I was fortunate to see them support Cannibal Corpse on the Gallery of Suicide tour. Pretty incredible night to say the least. I'm one who's not quite as into Lucifer and Lightning. For me the album didn't sound very good from a production standpoint. And the music suffers as a result. Still, the older albums are quite awesome.
Wow, Warlock, I envy you for your good fortune to have actually watched Angelcorpse backing CC, on that GoS tour that I had heard rave reviews about, from some fans I know. I rue not being there at the time.

Great to know that you're as big a fan of this band as I've always been. I really must get that live album DVD, Death Dragons, now that I've gushed about Angelcorpse here. Grin
