Anaal Nathrakh is an extreme metal duo act (from where else, but the bastion of battering rock-metal, i.e Birmingham, U.K
)--- with V.I.T.R.I.O.L (Dave Hunt) on vocals, and Irrumator (Mick Kenney), on everything else. They have also briefly had Shane Embury and Danny Herrera (both of Napalm Death) play for them, on bass and drums, respectively.
Anaal Nathrakh was formed in 1998 and have so far released 5 classic records and a superb EP. I don't know if they ever put out any Best Of type release for the casual fans. I put them here in Black Metal, cos most fans regard them as BM (which, of course, they are)---but for me they belong in a niche category of their own because they marry their bm with a consistent, and very conspicuous grindcore assault in their overall playing style on all of their albums, so far. AN are what has been dubbed by some people as 'blackened-grind' (Warlock, swear at me all you will.
:
. For me, the band's vocals is the main black metal element to their style, and the playing sounds to me rather more grindish than you'd expect from a typical, major bm act.
Anyway, I just think that AN actually manage to skillfully merge their unrelenting chaotic, ferocious sound and style with an underlying strong song-writing that lends their albums a ton of exhilarating extremeness. I mean, there does seem to be quite a bit of method and direction to their apparent 'madness' and all-out aggression. Anaal Nathrakh have had more than their share of sneering critics---and worshippers. Though, I've been die-hard fan, from the very start.
Their superb discography include (in sequence of release):
The Codex Necro,
When Fire Rains Down from the Sky, Mankind Will Reap as It Has Sown EP
Domine Non Es Dignus
Eschaton
Hell Is Empty, And All the Devils Are Here
In the Constellation of the Black Widow
^ I love 'em all almost equally, and it's a tough call to name a definite favourite AN album. However, I'm zapped as to how I could carelessly omit the outstanding Black Widow from my 'Best of 2009' list of favourites.
Anybody heard them yet? State your take!
