When I think of New Jersey (or actually even New York, in its entirety), I can't help but marvel at some of the truly terrific music that I've got from there; be it the 'hardcore', punk, or the NYDM scene that I've always admired. And, of course, there was Anthrax, a band I know most of you don't care about much.

Whiplash, though, is one of my favourite 'speed metal' acts, of a long time ago--(I could have easily put them in a Thrash thread, but speed/heavy seemed appropriate enough). They are from NJ, formed in '84-'85, had the 'three Tonys'
, Tony Portaro (vocals, guitar),
T. Scaglione (drums) and T. Bono (bass). They've also had other personnel in rotating line-ups in their active years. Whiplash released three excellent albums, before disbanding in '90. Reuniting in '96, they (the three Tonys) released another three albums in quick succession, before splitting up again. Tony Bono, the original bassist, sadly, passed away in 2002. Whiplash, then seemed pretty much done for good, before they suddenly reformed last year with a new line-up, and recorded and released their latest, Unborn Again disc, only a few months ago. I bought it last week-end, thought it was nothing outstanding or anything, but pretty decent and worthwhile listen. I don't think this band has ever released a sucky album, though some fans bitch about Insult to Injury and Cult of One. Their other records are: Power and Pain, Ticket to Mayhem, Sit Stand Kneel Pray and Thrashback. I really think that speed metal freaks that haven't yet heard Whiplash really must give them a hearing. They were one of the pioneers and a darn swell bunch of players.
