Not sure where to place 'em. Too many influences.. Anyways:

The Old Dead Tree is a French metal band, mixing i.e. doom, death and gothic influences. They've been around since 1997 but they're first release, mini-CD "The Blossom", wasn't released until 1999 and their first album "The Nameless Disease" was released in 2003.
After their succesfull mini-CD in 1999 unfortunately one of their members, drummer Frédéric Guillemot, committed suicide. After this, the band has been using this loss as an inspiring force to create their melancholic music.
Nowadays the band has quit. They've released one mini-CD and three studioalbums. I've enjoyed all their production.

Any other listeners here?

Discography:
The Blossom [miniCD] (1999)
The Nameless Disease (2003)
The Perpetual Motion (2005)
The Water Fields (2007)

I've heard about this band on another forum before. I meant to look into them, but I have yet to actually get any of their material. Which album would you recommend?

I'd say you'll have to start with The Nameless Disease. Definitely.Wink
I'm listening now and I say this sounds more like prog than doom. And the Metal Archives reviews are full of shit.
Well, it's got too many influences. Some say it's progressive, some say doom, some just say gothic. I'd say it's none of them, it's just got influences from all of them. Hard to cathegorize it, but like I said, didn't know where to put it, so I just set it here.
Also the band's got some difference between albums so..Shifty
