So I was about to bump the Immolation thread, having just finished listening to the amazing Dawn of Possession, when I ran a quick search and found out that we didn't have an Immolation thread. Erk

Anyways, Immolation is a death metal band from New York. They play a really crushing, dark style of death metal and are widely regarded as one of the best in the genre. Their debut, Dawn of Possession, is probably their most famous album, but it may not even be their best. They really haven't released anything that I would rate as less than "very good." DoP, Close to a World Below, and Unholy Cult are my favorites.

I'm not even going to ask if anyone else is a fan, because you all should be.
twins, I've forever been a complete Immo devotee, ever since I first heard them (yes, the magnificent Dawn of Possession debut full-length) about fourteen years ago. I rate ALL Immo discs as priceless death metal must-haves. The only one that is a relatively 'lesser' record in my eyes, is Harnessing Ruin. Immolation are hardly much 'catchy' or conventional (if a fan is looking for that) and instead can sound very dense, complex and hugely challenging on initial listens. Intense, inventive, atmospheric and brutal and original in a whole unique way, Immolation are NYDM legends that never quite got the praise and worship that their fellow new yorkers and death metal colossus, Suffocation always got.

My own strongest favourite Immo albums are: Here In After, Close to A World Below, and Unholy Cult (possibly my #1).

The others, Dawn of Possession, Harnessing Ruin and Shadows in the
Light are all classics on their own and part of the stellar discography and legacy of this mighty death metal band.

I've seen Immolation slay live onstage several times already---and their immaculate, precise musicianship is surreal...They are one of those metal bands that never seem to screw up at all, in the studios or the stages Grin

I definitely get what you're saying here. I had to listen to Dawn of Possession about five times before it really clicked with me. After that, of course, I started worshiping Immolation and got all of their studio albums.

I haven't had the opportunity to see them live yet, but hopefully they'll have a tour for the new album.
Yea twins, that's what I meant about Immo being so very unconventional with their often mind-bending, thoroughly unpredictable tempos, riffing and especially the seemingly odd drumming pattern etc....At bottom, though, they remain such compelling, virtuoso musicians that I've been sold on them for a long time.

I forgot to mention their Failures For Gods album, earlier. Some of the songs on that disc are especially exquisite extreme metal. I always thought, though, that Immo suffered somewhat from sub-par 'production' on all their albums, except their last one, Shadows in the Light----an outstanding album with top-notch production that finally did their music full justice.

And oh, although some people find them 'boring', I'm guessing that you'd actually love the tight, terrific live performances of Immo at the top of their game, anytime, anywhere in the world. Grin
Gosh, I totally forgot to mention Immo's latest disc, 'Majesty and Decay'. I had heard a few songs off the album only recently; felt pretty fired up, and now I've ordered it, expecting to get it, Sunday. twins, I'm almost dead sure MaD is guaranteed to be yet another Immolation inferno. The songs I had heard sounded killer, no kidding. And I'm betting this latest album is gonna be another Immo winner. You oughta buy it too, buddy! Smile

I checked out some of the songs on YouTube and they were rather good. Of course, I didn't expect anything less from Immolation.

Unfortunately, I don't have the money to buy it atm, but I've got a birthday coming up soon, so MaD is definitely going on the list.
