One of my favorite BM bands, and obviously one that most people have first heard as an intro to the genre. Here's something I wrote for a forum me and Butt frequent, a long long while ago:
Odds are any fan of metal in general will have heard of Mayhem. They are infamous for two events: The suicide of former frontman Dead (and the later appearance of a photograph of his dead body on the cover of a Mayhem bootleg, "Dawn Of The Black Hearts"), and the murder of guitarist and Black Metal pioneer Euronymous by none other than his fellow band mate Varg (aka Count Grishnackh). Of course, all of this gets a mix of responses from people. Some see it as an added effect to the music, and claim Mayhem to be the "one true" Black Metal band. Others will simply laugh at it and sign them off as a bunch of attention seeking simps that took things too far. Either way, they've been at the front of the genre for years, and for good reason: they make quality Black Metal. Actually, they made what many claim to be the best Black Metal album, in "De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas". I would reccomend this album to anyone as an introduction to Black Metal.
I have heard Mayhem but never got really into them. However I am going to see them live this July I believe it is so I'm pretty excited for that!
We are going to see them, it's gonna be fantastic. Plus I'm hoping to get a De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas shirt or something.
I love Mayhem. I own hardcopies of De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas as well as Live in Leipzig; and I've also heard assorted songs from other albums... just so fucking dark and sinister. Freezing Moon, De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas, My Death... so many good Mayhem songs.
Any enjoy Ordo Ad Chao? I love Attila's vocals, for me they more or less personify the spirit of true black metal. He can do some pretty impressive things. Also, this album has it where it counts; unstructured, dark, frost-bitten, corrupt and borderline ridiculous...awesome.
I love reading about this band more than I enjoy listening to them.
Every once in a while I still listen to Chainsaw Gutsfuck, if not for the right reasons.
So me and Matt be seeing them tomorrow.
Hopefully they play My Death, as well as a bunch of shit from De Mysteriis. Anybody got any recent setlists to look through?
So I got back, setlist was the same as that. Awesome as fuck. I wasn't expecting them to play De Mysteriis itself... if I recall, haven't they not played that live very frequently before?

Hearing the last minute or so of "Illuminate / Eliminate" live must be fucking monumental.
It was. Their whole set was just fucking unreal though. My Death, DMDS, Freezing Moon, Deathcrush... just fantastic. I was in a state of bliss during the whole set.
I wanted to go home and sleep.
Seriously though Attila's vocals were fucking fantastic I was not expecting that. Even though I didn't know any of their songs the show was decent.
I'm still pissed that we got ripped off band wise.

Out of all the advertised bands Mayhem was the only one who played. The had 2 local bands play instead I believe. Panzerfaust and Eclipse Eternal I think they were. They were pretty good but still.........

That sucks. I've heard that Panzerfuaust is really good.
