They deserve a thread. Maybe even two.

IMO, he's the best BM frontman evar. I think Ihsahn comes a close 2nd.
Immortal is pretty good, although I've only heard Blizzard Beasts and At the Heart of Winter (the latter being my favorite of the two).
Purists may disagree with what I'm about to say, but since you prefer ATHOW and can probably agree it was a major change in their style from BB, I suggest (no, I demand) you check out both "Damned In Black" and "Sons of Northern Darkness". There's a reason why me and some others say the latter is one of the best BM albums ever, bro. Both are phenomenal records. ATHOW is where Abbath first took a strong hold on the songwriting and direction the band took, and you can definitely notice from there on the songwriting improving and the sound fleshing itself out into something much bigger than it was at the beginning.
I just like the epic, overblown sound of the latter. There's a lot of atmosphere to that album, I enjoy it. I will definitely check out the last two albums, you have me intrigued.
For an ambivalent, mostly selective BM fan like myself, to say that Immortal is one among (only a handful) of my top favourite black metal bands, ever, gotta rank as very high praise indeed. Smile ...Despite their distinctly ultra-cheesy album covers, even several somewhat very ordinary songs, and 1-2 very less-than-stellar albums, I reckon Immortal must rank as one of the most inspirational and influential acts in a genre that, frankly,(for me, at any rate), doesn't have too many acts of that ilk.

I have already cited SOND as my ultimate BM (and Immortal) album of all time. Or should I listen to a lot more stuff still, before landing a verdict?? Lol Seriously, I can't think of too many metal bands of any genre, that can write songs of such quality, soooo late in their career, indeed their final studio hurrah. What a memorable way to go out, I remember thinking at the time. Other than that, I regard a classic like 'Pure Holocaust' nearly as highly. Damned in Black is another Immortal winner of sorts. Yet, I found AtHoW to be overly epic, atmospheric and yes, even over-lengthy to rank among my personal faves. It's probably a good, solid record, all the same, but it's the sort of bm that bores me pretty fast, all the time. I haven't heard the In the Heart of Winter album, in full yet. About time I should. And could 'Tyrants' be one of bm's best-known, most-loved songs???... Razz

As for best BM frontmen ever, Ihsahn might actually take top honours, on my card. But heck, if bm frontmen, Abbath et al, could seriously quit the wretched face paint they traditionally sport, they'd look a lot less like dolled-up pussies and finally do the varyingly great music they unleash, infiinitely greater justice, in some ways. At least, I'd not cringe with dismay when watching them upfront, in the flesh, LIVE.
I'm not a major fan of Immortal. But I do appreciate them. I like Damned In Black quite a bit. SOND I like just for Tatgrens production. Although it's got some quality songs as well. Unfortunately I don;t think I've ever had the patience to sit through an entire Immortal CD at one time. I usually lose interest after about 20 minutes or so.
I did get to see them live back in 02 (I think it was). And they definitely kicked ass.
CORPSEPAINT RULEZEZ LOLOLOL

I actually like it, sometimes it adds effect. But it can be overdone; especially in tandem with pictures taken in a forest at night with the band dressed like gothic stormtroopers carrying battleaxes or longswords.
So the new CD is out. Anyone else checked it out? I think its good. Maybe not amazing. But definitely good.

Reactions? Anecdotes? Limericks? Anything? ..............Anyone?
I downloaded it. I haven't given it a good enough listen to have any input yet but what I heard sounded decent.
New one is okay. Kinda disappointing, though, coming from a band as good as Immortal.
I have a very love/hate relationship with all black metal but I LOVE Immortal. They are amazing. I love all of their records pretty much, and mmtwinsfan, I agree completely. The new one is just okay and that's weird.
