It perplexes me how I haven't heard a single thing about this band on this forum - neither positive nor negative (I even made a search, the only two results were a spot on Noli's want list and a post I made in Now Playing), which makes this thread even more warranted.

When finding artists to compare Baroness to, the name that pops up most often is Mastodon. It's certainly justified given that both bands are proggy, sludgy and popular with hipsters, but they don't sound all that similar. Mastodon is on the eclectic and aggressive side of prog, while Baroness is on the more structured and catchier side of it (not that there's no aggression to be found here, though). I sense a slightly stronger punk presence in the band's second album, though that could just be me.

Also, did I mention that the band's brilliant cover art is done by their frontman?

And we used to sleep on the beach here, sleep overnight... but they don't do that anymore, things changed, you see... They don't sleep anymore on the beach...

I've only listened them to a little. Basically enough to conclude that Mastodon is better but not much else.

After my very first listen, I concluded that Crack the Skye is the only Mastodon album I prefer to Baroness's Red Album. I can't say exactly what made it click with me, but it's been a long time since an album impressed me so much on its first listen.
